At Home with Kids

As we move into the next school term and many parents are getting back into a routine of home-schooling, families are facing the challenge of keeping children’s needs met while at home.
The first step to removing some of the stress with kids at home is to maintain a schedule. The younger your children are, the more flexibility that you need to work into your schedule. By maintaining a schedule, everyone has an understanding of times dedicated to study and times for play. It will also allow kids a smoother transition when it is time to return to school.
So many Fort McMurray organizations and businesses have stepped up to help parents by moving their programs online. I have collected a list of some of my favourite online offerings for your kids:
CRAFT
There are so many craft ideas floating around social media at the moment and you can find projects for all age groups using a range of different crafting tools. If your kids are excited about a craft project but you don’t have everything you need at home or you are stuck for ideas, reach out to the team at Kathy’s Fiber Arts and Crafts. Kathy’s is offering free local delivery for orders over $100, so check out the online store at kathysfiberarts.ca to get started.
ACTIVITIES
Check out local blogger “Adventures of a Stepmom” on Facebook for great ideas of activities that you can do at home with the kids. Here you will find great ideas on crafts, experiments and fun for the whole family.
SCIENCE
Girls Inc of Northern Alberta have expanded their online science program. Through their Operation S.M.A.R.T program, Girls Inc will be showing experiments that participants will be able to do with items they may find around their home. Girls will also be able to participate in discussions of gender relative topics and self-expression through art. Register through their website.
EXERCISE
Promoting physical and mental health in children is important, especially in this constantly changing environment. PL3Y Kids Fitness offers free daily dance and yoga classes for kids to promote positivity, fun and fitness. Check out their Facebook Group and get your kids moving. While you are there, pop over and see PL3Y Education for a range of fitness, education and activity ideas.
MEDITATION
The Hub Family Resource Centre has created a series of videos to provide kids with a guided meditation. They say ”When children learn how to breathe deeply and fully, they will notice an immediate change in how they feel. Children will often feel calmer, more focused, less agitated and less reactive.” These videos are amazing. You can see them on their website
These are just some of the businesses and organizations that are stepping into the online world to help you manage this time of isolation. I would love to hear about the local services that you and your family are using.
